Multi-Slide & Pocket Doors

A wall of glass panels that slides open — stacking to one side or disappearing into a wall pocket — is one of the most requested upgrades in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, where indoor-outdoor living is a big part of the reason people live here.

Stacking vs. pocketing

  • Stacking multi-slide: panels slide and stack behind one fixed or sliding panel. No wall cavity needed beyond the opening itself.
  • Pocket multi-slide: panels slide into a pocket built into the adjacent wall so the opening is completely clear. Requires wall space and construction to create the pocket.
  • Corner configurations: some systems open at a corner with no post, which requires careful structural design.

What converting a standard opening involves

Widening an opening means removing wall and installing a header sized for the new span. That typically requires engineering, a building permit from the City of Scottsdale or the Town of Paradise Valley, and stucco and interior finish work. Plan for HOA review too if the elevation changes visibly.

What the estimate should address

Large glass walls are where quotes differ most, so get these in writing:

  • The exact system: brand, series, panel count, stacking or pocketing direction, and the overall size
  • Structure: whether the opening is being widened, who provides the engineering and header, and who pulls the building permit
  • Sill type and drainage: flush or raised sill, and the drainage plan for monsoon rain at that sill
  • The glass package: tempered dual-pane with hot-climate Low-E, with NFRC U-factor and SHGC
  • Frame finish inside and out, and confirmation the finish is offered in that size
  • Finish work: stucco, drywall, flooring at a flush sill, and paint, and which of those is in the price
  • Screens: whether a screen system is included and what type
  • HOA paperwork if the elevation changes
  • Warranties and schedule: product and workmanship warranties, manufacturing lead time, and install duration

Sills, dust, and monsoon rain

Multi-slide doors come with different sill options: flush (recessed into the floor for a seamless transition) or raised/surface-mounted. Flush sills look beautiful but need a proper drainage plan, especially on patios exposed to monsoon rain. Wide tracks also collect dust, so ask how the track drains and how it is cleaned.

See the wall disappear

Panels stack to one side (or tuck into a pocket) and the opening becomes the room's best feature. Your dealer will confirm stacking direction, panel count, and the sill detail that suits your patio.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a multi-slide door to my existing home?

Usually, yes, but widening an opening is a structural change that needs a properly sized header, engineering, and a building permit. An in-home assessment will show what is feasible on your wall.

What is the difference between a pocket door and a stacking multi-slide door?

A stacking multi-slide door stacks its panels behind one another within the opening; a pocket door slides the panels into a cavity in the adjacent wall so the opening is completely clear.

Are flush sills a good idea in Arizona?

Flush sills are possible and popular, but they need a deliberate drainage design because monsoon storms can drive water across a patio. Raised sills are more forgiving for water and dust.

Do multi-slide doors let in a lot of heat?

Any large glass area adds heat gain, so specify dual-pane hot-climate Low-E glass and consider covered patios or overhangs on west- and south-facing walls.
