Bifold vs. multi-slide
- Bifold: opens nearly the full width; panels stack perpendicular to the opening, so you need space for the folded stack. More panel joints and hardware.
- Multi-slide: larger glass panels and fewer vertical frames when closed, which many people prefer for views. Unless pocketed, part of the opening stays covered by stacked panels.
For view-focused rooms that are closed most of the summer, multi-slide is often the better fit; for patios used heavily in spring and fall, bifold can feel more open.
Structural and weather considerations
Bifold doors are top-hung or bottom-rolling and need a stiff header that will not deflect. Like any wide opening, enlarging the wall needs engineering and a permit. Ask about sill options for water and dust, and choose dual-pane Low-E tempered glass.
